Here in California, it's a treat to go outside with my oil pastels, find a spot that calls to me with possibility and stay there, drawing for a long time.

One of the loveliest parts of plein aire work is the way that the spaces open up with new details if enough time is given to looking in one spot. It is also a pleasure to take that drawing back to the studio and interpret it in oils.

In Spain, I spent every morning and afternoon (before and after the intense heat of midday), painting the similar scenes around our finca, always marveling at the light and beauty of the red earth, Mediterranean trees and sky.
