BIO
I come from New York. I have great fortune for having been artistically
informed by such wonderful places as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and
the Museum of Modern Art. I would cut high school to go and spend a day
surrounded by my favorites in museums or the 57th Street galleries.
When Picasso had his 80th birthday there were museums and galleries all
over NYC celebrating with his work everywhere. I saw it all, loving his
graphic and sculptural genius and how prolific he was. I went to the
Art Student's League in my early teens, drew and painted constantly and
then went to art school - Pratt.
After graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, I received a two
year fellowship grant at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA.
There, with exposure to renouned artists such as Robert Motherwell,
Helen Frankenthaler, Red Grooms, Myron Stout, Jim Forsberg and Fritz
Bultman, I rounded out my education. We also breathed the
rare air of intimate readings and small get-togethers with the writers
- Norman Mailer, Robert Lowell, Alan Dugan, Stanley Kunitz. It was an
exceptional time in my coming of age as an artist and a woman.
I married an artist and we moved to central Maine, homesteaded and
began raising our son. I left after a few years and I went on to
Nashville, TN, after a year or so there I moved to Berkeley, CA.
I became involved with ceramics and helped my new partner in his
pottery while I also began sculpting. We raised our son, Aharon, who is a
musician, and we moved from the bay area to the northern coast of California.
We hear the ocean and smell the sweet salty air as we garden. We keep
watch over our ducks and veggies while the ocean influences all our
lives. I am aware of the blessings of being in this beautiful place and
doing the work I do.
I have been included in numerous juried regional and national shows over the years, and have received recognition in the form of awards. My work has been shown and is in collections in Paris, Florence, England an Israel, as well as throughout the United States.
My commercial experience has been in exhibits for a natural science museum, images and designs for a prestigious greeting card company, book jacket design and book illustration, and film titles. My repetoire also includes tile designs, garden and indoor sculptures and fountains.
I have recently returned to Judaism, learning about the Torah, prayer and the Kabbalah. I am drawn to these works, inspired by them and my art is being informed by the spirit and metaphysical understandings in this great heritage.
The thread of my work comes through, whatever the subject matter or
media and however different the surface appearances may be. People say
often that the more they look, the more they see in my work - slowly
images and ideas unfold, giving them pleasure and keeping the mystery
of creation alive.
